Independent Writing Across the Genres
“Independent Writing Projects Across the Genres,” can be found in the If. . Then. . .Curriculum found in the Units of Study in Opinion, Information and Narrative Writing, Grade 2 by Lucy Calkins and Julia Mooney (2013).

This unit, perfect for the end of year, invites children to first think of a topic of interest (e.g. hiking) and then asks them to decide how they will write about this topic.  For example:
Do I want to . . .
  • Write a story about a time when I went hiking?
  • Convince someone it's a great way to spend the day?
  • Teach someone all about hiking?
  • Write a poem about being on the trail?

Minilessons can focus on drafting and revising across genres. Possible minilessons that would support students in strengthening their writing across all genres include:
  • Narrowing the focus
  • Including a balance of narrative details (thinking, action, talking) whether writing a story or using a mini-story in opinion writing or in nonfiction writing
  • Creating a strong beginning and ending
  • Editing for conventions and spelling

Celebrate students' writing as a culmination of the year, sending children off for the summer with a motivation to continue writing and to hold onto their summer experiences!

For more information on generating a series of minilessons for this unit, please see your Literacy Coach for support.
